Description
An album of 158 pages containing 346 prints. The album is portrait with cream coloured leaves though otherwise of similar form to the other blue albums.
The majority of the prints show excavations in the castle (see bibliographic reference for publication). The prints are of a mixture of 2.5 x 3.5 in, 4.25 x 6.25 in, 4.75 x 6.5 in and 5.75 x 8.5 in sizes. The majority of the prints are unlabelled and the only numbers given are a simple number run, not photographic job numbers. There are some scrap paper labels placed loosely between the pages but there is no surety to which photographs they refer. Because of the impossibility of identifying the location of the majority of the photographs any more accurately they have not been catalogued at item level.
The photographs appear to cover a range of excavated areas including buildings and non structural features and there are some burials (pages 45 to 49) and finds (pages 132 to 134).
Not all the prints are dated so the date given is based on their appearance and the dates of excavations.
There are also a small number of detail and general views of the curtain wall during consolidation.
There are a large numbers of duplicates in the album, some are on the same page, others widely spaced and there are prints of different sizes taken from the same negative.
On pages 142, 144 and 146 there are two views of unidentified buildings that are not part of the castle. (There are two copies of each print.) One of the buildings is a modern brick structure with a statue in a niche, the other appears to be the gable wall of a ruined medieval hall or Abbey.
