Description

An album of 74 pages containing 73 prints and 1 sketch plan. There is a print missing from page 14 but the caption is still in place.

The sketch map shows the outline of the forts buildings and gives names to the main buildings and different sections of the defences. There is also a photograph of a nineteenth century plan of the fort and headland from the PRO.

There are 6 aerial photographs of the fort and a series of detail views of the steps over casemates 65 and 66 and the interior of casemate 65. The remainder of the prints are general and exterior views of the main buildings and fortification sections of the fort.

The general prints are from two main periods, one set are from the early 1960s and show the fort still in army hands with renovation or demolition work going on. The second group date from the mid 60s to mid 70s and show the fort as taken over by English Heritages predecessor agencies in 1965.

Each page has a caption below the print but there are also captions on the reverse of each page. In general these agree but use different wording. The captions under the prints appear to be earlier and were followed in cataloguing.
