Description

An album of 118 pages containing 122 black and white photographs.

The album is divided into three main sections: The first 55 pages contain detailed and general views of the tower showing problems including fractures and inadequate river bank support and some views of excavations at the base of the tower.

Pages 56 to 105 contain views of renovations in progress, these included placing concrete stitches across the fractures, building a reinforced concrete ring beam corseted with high tension steel rods around the base and adding new steel sheet piling around the river bank. The renovations took place in 1953 - 1957.

Page 106 is blank except for a title of 'Access route for contractors'. Pages 107 to 118 show this route which runs from Bishopsgate Street down a lane, past a rugby pitch and onto an area of open ground by the tower.
