Description

An album of 161 pages containing 161 photographs. The album has not been catalogued to item level as all the photographs cover a unified subject, are close in date and in almost all cases are uncaptioned.

The album contains progress shots of the re-setting of one of the central trilithons composed of Stones 53, 54 and lintel 154. The stones were already standing but needed to be straightened and reset to make them secure. During this operation other stones had to be propped.

The first page has an airphotograph of the stones from the north on the 30 Jul 1963, before the resetting.

The next 5 pages contain unlabeled general and detail views of the stones, presumably before resetting.

Pages 7 - 118 are from one photographic job (A6498/1-118 with 33, 46 93, 95 and 100 missing) which is composed of general and detail views of the lifting, excavation, creation of a concrete socket and re-setting process. They were obviously taken over more than one day but all have the date May - June 1964 and no captions.

Pages 119 - 161 all come from the same photographic job (A6568/1 - 43) but 1 - 29 are dated 10 - 11th Jul 1964, and 30 - 43 are dated the 12 Aug 1964. All the prints except one are uncaptioned.

A6568/1 - 29 are mostly detailed views of the base of one of the trilithon uprights ready to have the concrete base poured around it (with 4 general views around the circle and 2 of the propped trilithon, A6568/12 - 17).

A6568/30 - 33 are detailed views of the concrete infilling in an eroded section of the base of Stone 60 that was done in the 1950s.

A6568/34 - 43 are detailed views of the top of the lintel of trilithon 51/52 showing the weathering of the Selastic stonedust added in the 1950s to reduce the erosion of the stone.
