The album contains two general and 49 detailed views of the site during the excavations of 1938/1939 carried out by Mrs Elsie Clifford, whose name is on the front of the album. These excavations were mostly in the west wing and were interrupted by war before they could be completed.
The photographs have not been catalogued at item level as they form a consistent block of prints, from the same date with the same subject. There are no captions or dates for them in the album and the excavation report was not available.
The majority of the views appear to show various drains and excavated surfaces including tesserae and tiles, as well as walls. There are two more general views over the south west wing and west corner of the villa on pages 1 and 3.
Prints are stuck on both sides of the leaves of the album. In all 23 leaves (45 sides), at the front of the album, have photographs attached to them. There are a further 34 blank leaves at the back of the album.
The photographs vary between c.6.5 x c.9.5 in (max 7.5 and 10.5) and 2.5 x 3.5 in.
