Description

The ‘Central London Sick Asylum’ at Colindale, Hendon opened in 1900. It was operated by the ‘Central London Sick Asylum District’, one of several ‘districts’ established by the ‘Metropolitan Asylums Board’ (MAB). The Board provided hospitals for patients who had previously been housed in workhouses. Establishments built and run by the MAB included isolation hospitals for fevers and smallpox, hospitals for people with severe learning disabilities, and tuberculosis hospitals. In 1913, the ‘Central London Sick Asylum District’ was dissolved and the hospital was sold to the City of Westminster Union and was renamed Hendon Infirmary. It was taken over by the ‘Metropolitan Asylums Board’ in 1919 and reopened in 1920 as Colindale Hospital. In 1930 it was passed to London County Council, and joined the NHS in 1948. The hospital closed in 1996.
