Description

The ‘Metropolitan Asylum for Imbeciles’, also known as the ‘Metropolitan District Asylum for Chronic Imbeciles’, was opened in 1870. It was renamed ‘Caterham Mental Hospital’ in 1920. During the Second World War the hospital became Caterham Emergency Hospital as part of the Emergency Medical Service. In 1941, it was renamed St Lawrence’s Hospital. The hospital closed in 1994.
