Description

The ‘Poplar and Stepney Sick Asylum’ opened in 1871. The site was to the south of the Stepney Workhouse; the hospital was built by the ‘Metropolitan Asylums Board’ which had been established under the 1867 Metropolitan Poor Act to provide hospitals for patients who had previously been housed by workhouses. The hospital was renamed St Andrew’s Hospital in 1920. A reduction in services began in around 1990, and St Andrew’s Hospital closed in 2006.
