The Sheffield Union Workhouse at Fir Vale was formally opened in 1881. In 1906 the workhouse’s hospital was separated from the rest of the site and was renamed Sheffield Union Hospital. It was later known as Fir Vale Hospital, while the workhouse was known as Fir Vale House Poor Law Institution from 1912. In 1930 the hospital was officially renamed as the City General Hospital, and this name then encompassed the whole site - including the former workhouse - from 1948. In 1967 it became the Northern General Hospital.
