The Sunderland Union Workhouse at Hylton Road was built between 1853 and 1855. In the late 1860s, school buildings were erected to the south of the main workhouse building, and a new hospital or infirmary was built on the west of the site in 1902. As with many former workhouses, the Sunderland Union Workhouse became a hospital in the 20th century: in 1931, the workhouse became ‘Highfield Institute and Municipal Hospital’, and upon joining the NHS in 1948 it was renamed Sunderland District General Hospital, later Sunderland Royal Hospital. Many of the original buildings were replaced during the 20th century.
