The buildings of Sefton General Hospital were originally the Toxteth Park Union Workhouse, or Toxteth Park Workhouse. The workhouse was built in 1859. The workhouse’s hospital was originally at the south of the site, but by the 1890s and 1905 two more hospital buildings had been constructed at the east and north of the site respectively.

As with many former workhouses, the Toxteth Park Union Workhouse became a hospital in the 20th century. It was renamed to the ‘Smithdown Road Institution’ in 1923, and in the early 1930s it became the Smithdown Road Infirmary. In around 1950, after joining the NHS, the hospital was renamed Sefton General Hospital. It closed in the 1990s.
