Description

A file containing a range of old photographs of the Palace. The majority show the Great Hall roof during renovations but there are also exterior views and general views of the grounds and north bridge.

The prints are from a variety of sources. As well as those assumed to be by photographers working for the Office of Works or successor agencies there are also several series of prints by other photographers.

Due to the technical and recording nature of the prints by A E Walsham it seems likely these were commissioned from him by the Office of Works or contractors in charge of renovations.

There is also a series of prints by Central Press Photo Ltd who retain copyright and some by Nathaniel Lloyd which are linked to his negatives which are held elsewhere in the NMR.

Some of the prints are dated but many are not and dates have been estimated based on the appearance of the site and other clues in the photographs and their extents. These estimations are explained either individually or at sub-file level where possible
