Description

A collection of 5 black and white negatives, showing details and pipeworkings of a Ministry of Works steel plumbing unit, at a storage depot in Bristol. The images show the standardised back-boiler, or Kitchen/Bathroom (K.B.) Unit that was installed within modular prefabricated housing between the bathroom and kitchen. These boilers economised space and limited the use of extensive plumbing and pipework. The images are representative of the type of technology and domestic furnishings that were installed into postwar Ministry of Works housing. The Ministry of Works was the government department tasked with the organisation and efficiency of the push for postwar housing construction.

The original envelop lists the storage location of these units as the Bristol Aircraft Factory. This location has been taken to mean the Bristol Aeroplane Company Works in Filton, Bristol The original Ministry of Works storage envelope lists the operator as “E”.

None of the images were catalogued and digitised as part of a 2020 project.
