A collection of 3 black and white negatives, showing the exterior of completed prefabricated Phoenix temporary bungalows, in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. The Temporary Housing Act of 1944/5 was intended to alleviate the acute housing shortages of the immediate postwar years, mostly through the construction of prefabricated, modular housing. The Ministry of Works was the government department tasked with the organisation and efficiency of the push for housing construction. A number of individual designs and construction methods for housing were built during the 1940s. The Phoenix bungalow was designed and built by John Laing construction company, as well as by the construction firms McAlpine and Henry Boot. The bungalow was constructed in-situ and was steel framed with asbestos cement clad walls. Although intended to only last around 10 years, many examples remain standing and in use in 2019. A series of Phoenix bungalows at Moseley, Birmingham were Grade II listed in 1998.
The original Ministry of Works storage envelope lists the division as "D.D.T.H" and the operator as “D”.
