Description

A collection of 3 black and white negatives showing exterior views of completed Nash type brick houses for the Ministry of Works at an unspecified location in Hayes, Hillingdon. The Ministry of Works was the government department tasked with the organisation and efficiency of the push for postwar housing construction. The Temporary Housing Act of 1944/5 was intended to alleviate the acute housing shortages of the immediate postwar years, mostly through the construction of prefabricated, modular housing. The Nash type was described as a “traditional brick house” in the original Ministry of Works envelope. It is unclear where exactly these houses were constructed. It has been difficult to find information on the Nash type houses, although given the traditional style of the homes, it may be a reference to the work of nineteenth century architect John Nash.

The original Ministry of Works storage envelope lists the operator as “D” and division as “C.S.A”

1 of the 3 images were catalogued and digitised as part of a 2020 project.
