Description

A collection of 25 black and white images from the construction of prefabricated Stent Type permanent homes, at an unknown location. The Stent type was a precast reinforced concrete (PRC) dwelling. The PRC properties were quick to assemble and required less skilled labour as the concrete panels were bolted together to form the property. Around 1,300 of the permanent homes were built and were intended to last 60 years. By the 1980s many of the PRC houses, such as the Stent, were showing defects, ensuring that they were classified as defective and in need of repair by the 1984/5 Housing Defects Act. Gaining a mortgage on unmodified PRC houses in the twenty-first century is consequently very difficult. A number of the negatives within this volume are overexposed and depict next to no discernible details.

The original Ministry of Works storage envelope lists operator as “D” and the division as “CSA”.

4 of the 25 images were catalogued and digitised as part of a 2020 project.
