Description

A collection of 5 black and white negatives showing details of repair work undertaken by the Ministry of Works to a London County Council flats at the Millbank Estate, London. The Ministry of Works was the government department tasked with the organisation and efficiency of the push for housing construction after the end of World War 2. As well as building new homes, the Ministry also repaired wartime damage to existing housing stocks. The Millbank Estate consisted of 12 blocks of flats and the repairs depicted in the images are to the Ruskin Buildings.

The Millbank estate was built in the early 20th century and was one of the most significant estates built by the LCC. The blocks remain standing in 2020 and received listed status in 1970. The PSA01/04/H series includes various sets of photographs, taken at regular intervals, showing reconstruction in progress on this site.

The original Ministry of Works storage envelope lists the operator as “D”.
