Description

A collection of 4 black and white negatives showing repair work undertaken by the Ministry of Works to London County Council flats at the Bourne Estate, Holborn, London. The Ministry of Works was the government department tasked with the organisation and efficiency of the push for housing construction after the end of the Second World War. As well as building new homes, the Ministry also repaired wartime damage to existing housing stocks. The majority of the Bourne Estate was built in the early twentieth century (1905-1909) and was designed by the London County Council (LCC) architect’s department. The estate was damaged during the bombing raids of WW2, probably in 1943 when surrounding industrial buildings were targeted. Between 2013-2016, Camden Council regenerated the block and constructed a mixture of new social and residential housing. The majority of the estate was listed in 1999 as an example of one of three major housing estates constructed by the LCC prior to WW1. The original Ministry of Works storage envelope lists the operator as “D”.
