Description

A series of 2 negatives taken for the Ministry of Works showing blocks of flats on Dufferin Street covered in scaffolding during renovation, possibly as a result of wartime bomb damage. The Ministry of Works was the Government department tasked under the 'Temporary Housing Act 1944/45' with alleviating the acute housing shortages in the immediate postwar years. The dwellings date from the 1880s and were constructed privately to house costermongers displaced by the Whitecross Street slum clearance scheme. In 1891 they became Council property and and have been owned since 1967 by the Peabody Trust.

The original Ministry of Works storage envelope lists the operator as “K”.
