Description

A series of 5 black and white negatives showing details of repair work undertaken by the Ministry of Works to London County Council flats on the Millbank Estate, London. The Ministry of Works was the Government body tasked with addressing housing shortages in post-war Britain. As well as building new homes, the Ministry also repaired wartime damage to existing housing stocks. The Millbank Estate consists of 12 blocks of flats and the repairs depicted in the images are to Ruskin Buildings (now Ruskin House). The Millbank estate was built in the early 20th century and was one of the most significant estates built by the LCC. The blocks received listed building status in 1970. Photographs within the PSA01/04/H series record the progress on this site at regular ntervals. The original Ministry of Works storage envelope lists the operator as “D”.
