Description

Five black and white negatives showing repair work undertaken by the Ministry of Works to London County Council flats on the Wedmore Estate, Islington. The Ministry of Works was the Government body tasked with addressing housing shortages in post-war Britain. . As well as building new homes, the Ministry also repaired wartime damage to existing housing stocks. The block of flats at the Wedmore Estate were known collectively as the Wessex Buildings, and consisted of three blocks of 40 flats, Melchester, Norcombe and Weatherbury Houses. The images in this collection appear to show damage to an end of one of these blocks. The blocks remain standing in 2021.

The original Ministry of Works storage envelope lists the operator as “L”.
