Description

A series of 5 negatives taken for the Ministry of Works showing houses on the Broadmoor Estate. The houses featured are 'The Ashes' and 'The Oaks', probably built as staff accommodation for workers at Broadmoor Hospital. Dating from 1863, Broadmoor Hospital is the oldest high-security hospital in England.

The Ministry of Works was the Government department tasked under the 'Temporary Housing Act 1944/45' with alleviating the acute housing shortages in the immediate postwar years. The original Ministry of Works storage envelope lists the operator as “F”.
