Nine black and white negatives taken for the Ministry of Works showing newly constructed Ministry of Supply (M.O.S) housing at Oakridge to the north of Basingstoke. These views include numbers 5-35 Oakridge Road plus interior views showing heating systems and a kitchen. In 1946 the M.O.S. took over responsibilty for atomic weapons research. This initial phase of the Oakridge development was built in the early 1950s, primarily to house employees of the nearby Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston. The Ministry of Works was the Government department tasked under the 'Temporary Housing Act 1944/45' with alleviating the acute housing shortages in the immediate postwar years. The original Ministry of Works storage envelope lists the operator as “Q”.
