Description

Thirty-five black and white negatives produced for the Department of the Environment Photographic Library showing exterior views of the 'Brocklebank Phase II' housing development in Wandsworth, Greater London. The development was constructed on the site of the former Wandsworth and Clapham Union Workhouse. The building was later known as the Swaffield Road Institution and then Brockle Bank (a name presumably derived from Brocklebank Road to the north east of the site). The former workhouse buildings survived at least until the late 1960s and possibly into the 1970s, prior to their demolition. The Department of the Environment (along with its predecessor bodies the Ministry of Works and The Ministry of Public Building and Works) was the department responsible for government building projects and managing post war housing requirements.

Fourteen of the thirty-five negatives have been catalogued in detail.
