Description

One hundred and twenty eight black and white negatives produced by the Department of the Environment Photographic Library to illustrate a report titled "Families in Flats" by Judith Littlewood and Anthea Tinker (H.M. Stationery Office, 1981). The negatives show three large housing estates in London: Chalcot Estate, near Swiss Cottage, NW3, the Heygate Estate, Walworth, S17 and the Alyesbury Estate, Walworth, SE17. The Chalcot Estate was built in 1965-70 by Camden Council to the designs of Dennis Lennon and Partners. The Heygate Estate was completed in 1974. Following controversial redevelopment plans, demolition of the estate began in April 2011 and was completed in July 2014. The Aylesbury Estate comprises 2,700 dwellings and is said to be one of the largest public housing estates in Europe. It was constructed between 1963 and 1977. From the 1980s onwards the estate saw a period of decline and in 2005 the London Borough of Southwark ordered the phased demolition of the estate and its replacement with houses, under the control of a housing association. The Department of the Environment (along with its predecessor bodies the Ministry of Works and The Ministry of Public Building and Works) was the department responsible for government building projects and managing post war housing requirements.

This group of negatives was originally housed with PSA01/04/H00793. The original packaging for both sets of negatives was labelled "Knox House, Nr Swiss Cottage, London". Not all of the negatives within this group have been catalogued in detail.
