Description

Sixteen black and white negatives produced for the Department of the Environment Photographic Library showing homes on the Four Acre Estate in St Helen's, Merseyside. The photography was taken in support of the 'Estate Action' programme (previously the Urban Housing Renewal Unit) adminstered by the Department of the Environment. This initiative was estatablished to carry out improvements and modernisation to council managed housing estates.

That part of the estate bounded by Four Acre Lane (to the north) and Clock Face Road (to the east) was originally divided into sections known as Redacre, Blueacre and Whiteacre, plus Green Acre Close and Long Acre Walk. These addresses have now all been replaced with new street names and numbers, although most of the originally homes still exist. The negatives within this group show homes at Blueacre, Whiteacre, Redacre, Burnage Avenue, Pollitt Crescent and Longacre Walk. The 'operator' for this group is recorded as "A Reece". The Department of the Environment (along with its predecessor bodies the Ministry of Works and The Ministry of Public Building and Works) was the department responsible for government building projects and managing post war housing requirements.

Not all of the negatives have been catalogued in detail.
