Description

Two black and white negatives produced for the Department of the Environment Photographic Library showing Southall Water Tower and 11 Avalon Road, Fulham. The water tower was built between 1895-1903 to supply water for steam locomotives on the Great Western Railway line at Southall. After closure it became derelict, before eventually being converted into flats betweeen 1979 and 1983. 11 Avalon Road is a late Victorian terraced house. The original negative enclosure describes the contents as 'Research on Housing co-operatives' and gives the address details as 367 Chiswick High Road (not present) and 11 Avalon Road. The 'operator' for this group is recorded as 'A.R.'. The Department of the Environment (along with its predecessor bodies the Ministry of Works and The Ministry of Public Building and Works) was the department responsible for government building projects and managing post war housing requirements.

Both of the negatives have been catalogued in detail.
