Description

The report (see RAH02/01 for various reports and offprints and RAH02 for correspondence relating to payments to Mr Rahtz for writing the report) was published in the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Magazine. The publication of the Old Sarum report, (along with one of barrow excavations at Down Farm, Pewsey, Wiltshire) was supported by a partial grant from the Ministry of Works.

The correspondence provides a record of negotiations and authorisation for the publication of the report and a grant towards printer's costs. The archive also contains a copy of the receipt from the printers and an authorisation of payment from the ministry (recorded as administrative records).

The negotiations for publication took some time and the correspondence is spread over a period of 18 months. The formal correspondence (12 pieces) is between various ministry officials and Mr Sabben-Clare, Honorary Editor of the magazine. There are also five pages of internal correspondence between ministry officials relating to the publication and grant. These internal notes are less formal and one note is written below another as the sheets were passed around.
