Description

Fifteen black and white photographs showing King Richard III House in Sandside. Three of the photographs are modern copies of late Victorian or Edwardian views. The remainder are interior views commissioned by Scarborough Borough Council and taken by Frederick Stanley Cheer in the early 1960s. These are largely detailed views of the building's fabric. The house acquired its name because it is said that King Richard III stayed at the property in 1484 whilst on naval business in Scarborough. During much of the 19th century it was used for various businesses. In 1908 the Seamen's Mission Institute acquired the building to provide recreational facilities for boys under the age of 16. Around 1914 it became a museum, which it remained until 1964 when the building was sold and converted into a cafe. Not all of the photographs have been catalogued in detail. A full handlist is available.
