Forty nine black and white photographs showing the rebuilding of the Valley Bridge in Scarborough. The original Valley Bridge openind in 1865. This bridge was originally intended to span the River Ouse at York. Work began on the Ouse crossing in 1860 but in 1861 disaster struck and the bridge (known as the Lendal Bridge) collapsed into the river during construction, killing five workers. The collapsed bridge was purchased by a group of Scarborough business people who erected it over the Valley. A toll was levied to cross the bridge. By the early 20th century it was apparent that the bridge was too narrow to cope with increased traffic. The photographs within this group show the reconstruction and widening of the Valley Bridge which took place between 1925 and 1928. Many show the workers and machinery involved in the project. They have each been labelled with captions and dates. Some are stamped "Produced by H Walker, Scarborough".
All of the photographs have been catalogued in detail.
