Military Command and Control Organisation

Author(s): Paul Francis, Graham Crisp

This research on the United Kingdom’s 20th century Military Command and Control Organisation was carried out by Paul Francis and Graham Crisp for English Heritage. Through primary documentary sources it has located all the main locations that were used as headquarters by the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force, and United States forces based in England. It also discusses how the various headquarters and associated commands evolved throughout the 20th century. The report primarily focuses on headquarters in England, however, to provide a fuller national understanding of the command structures locations in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are also noted. The report will be of particular use to Historic Environment Records to locate sites within their areas and to researchers who may wish to explore this topic in greater depth. The report was funded by English Heritage’s Historic Environment Enabling Programme (HEEP).
