Lesnes Abbey, Bexley, Greater London: Report on Geophysical Surveys, August and October 2024

Author(s): Andy Payne, Neil Linford, Megan Clements

Earth resistance (1.0ha) and magnetometer (0.9ha) surveys, together with wider vehicle towed Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) coverage (2.8ha), were conducted across accessible areas at Lesnes Abbey, Bexley, Greater London, in response to a request from the Historic England London and South East regional team. The surveys aimed to improve the understanding of the extent and survival of the remains of the medieval abbey and associated structures beyond the area of the standing ruins. The geophysical surveys have identified structures associated with the different phases of occupation at Lesnes Abbey, together with evidence for Second World War activity, recent landscaping, and both modern and historic drains and utilities. The geophysical results partially corroborate and enhance previous excavations, analytic earth work and utility surveys at the site. Field work for the geophysical surveys was conducted in August and October 2024.
