Maiden Castle, Swaledale, North Yorkshire: archaeological survey report

Author(s): Mark Bowden

Maiden Castle enclosure, Swaledale, its avenue and two adjacent cairns were surveyed by RCHME Newcastle in 1996 at the request of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The enclosure is of uncertain but probably late prehistoric date, situated on a north-facing slope at about 300m OD at Harkerside in Grinton parish, Richmondshire, North Yorkshire. Any defensive capability of the enclosure is severely compromised by its topographic location.
