52-55 Newington Green, Islington: The Historical Development of the Oldest Surviving Terrace of Houses in England

Author(s): Richard Lea

Nos. 52-55 Newington Green are dated to 1658 by a panel above the central pilaster in the main facade. It is perhaps the oldest surviving terrace of houses in England. The use of classical orders in the facade form a direct link with earlier developments in Covent Garden, Great Queen Street, and Lincoln's Inn Fields of the 1630s and 40s, none of which survive.
