Pett Level, Rother, East Sussex: Palaeoecological Investigation of the ‘Submerged Forest’ and Intertidal Peat

Author(s): Scott Timpany, Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Elaine Dunbar, Paula Reimer, David Smith, Cathy Tyers, Peter Marshall

Investigations at Pett Level have recorded a complex stratigraphic sequence of intercalated peats and clayey-silts. Peat development was asynchronous with marine incursions the result of localised flooding of the offshore shingle barrier. The remains of the ‘submerged forest’ do not represent the remains of a single contemporary woodland but are a palimpsest of trees that grew over a period of c1500 years.
