St Osyth's Priory, St Osyth, Essex: Report on Geophysical Surveys, November 2024

Author(s): Megan Clements, Neil Linford, Andy Payne

A vehicle towed Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) (2.0ha) and earth resistance (0.93ha) surveys were conducted across accessible areas of St Osyth’s Priory, St Osyth, Essex, in response to a request from the Historic England East of England regional team. The surveys aimed to improve the understanding of the priory and its immediate landscape setting. The geophysical surveys have identified buried structures that are most likely related to previous phases of the priory complex with additional evidence for both historic and modern services, as well as possible landscape and garden features. A number of anomalies detected over the North Lawn, including a large near-surface rectilinear response, are difficult to fully interpret. The fieldwork was conducted between the 19th and 21st of November 2024.
