DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF A TIMBER CIRCLE AT HOLME-NEXT-THE-SEA, NORFOLK

Author(s): C Groves

Dendrochronological analysis of the inverted tree-bole and the posts forming the surrounding timber circle revealed near Holme-next-the-Sea in AD 1998 has indicated that the structure was erected shortly after felling in the spring or early summer of 2049 BC. The posts and tree-bole are all contemporaneous and there is no evidence for later modifications or repairs to the structure. Information concerning the construction techniques has also been produced and the data is giving a potentially valuable insight into the environmental effects on the local landscape at the time leading up to the construction of the timber circle. The data has also provided a rare opportunity to extend the network of prehistoric chronologies with the production of a well-replicated single site chronology.
