Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from New Inn House, 7 Wotton Road, Kingswood, Gloucestershire
Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cliff Litton
A total of 77 core samples was obtained from a wide range of locations at New Inn House, Kingswood. The analysis of these samples produced a single site chronology consisting of 66 samples, with a combined overall length of 329 rings. This site chronology was dated as spanning the years AD 1191 to AD 1519. Interpretation of the sapwood on the dated samples would indicate that the roof of the rear (north-east) wing, including its east-most bay, the roof of the south-west wing, including its south-most bay, are all constructed of timbers felled in AD 1495. The joists of the ground- and first-floor ceilings, including a number of principal bridging beams, are also made of timber felled in AD 1495. The only exception to this dating is the roof of the angle infill between the north-east and the south-west wings which is constructed of timber felled in AD 1519.
