Description

In 1944 the Ministry of Works built a small estate of prefabricated houses and flats on Edward Road and West End Gardens, Northolt to understand more about the costs and efficiencies associated with different construction methods.

The row of four terraced houses was unit 8 of the demonstration estate. The house was similar to the Yardstick house at unit 3, but afforded the Ministry an experience of constructing houses in terraced form. The total floor area of each dwelling was 850 sq. ft. The original annotations on the image sleeves often include the word “gas” and “amenity houses”, indicating that they uniquely (for the estate) sourced their energy from a gas supply.
