Description

Seven black and white negatives taken by the Ministry of Works to illustrate damage caused in the vincinity of 1-3 Lavender Hill, Clapham at junction of Lavender Hill, Cedars Road, Wandsworth Road and Queenstown Road. The photographs were taken in support of a War Damage claim and show buildings on all sides of the road junction. By the time the site was surveyed numbers 1-3 Lavender Hill had already been demolished, leaving an empty plot. During the Second World War the British Government established the War Damage Commission to assess and pay compensation for war damage caused to land, buildings and machinery.

The Ministry of Work was the Government department tasked by the 'Temporary Housing Act 1944/45' with alleviating the acute housing shortages in the immediate postwar years.

All seven negatives were catalogued in 2022.
