The collection comprises a printed book entitled 'Dockyard Economy and Naval Power' written by Patrick Barry. The book contains 31 black and white photographs showing early views of workshops, ship building, dockyards, munitions works and forges relating to naval production in London and Liverpool. The book was printed by Sampson Low Son, and, Co. of 47 Ludgate Hill, London in 1863.
The photographs show interiors and exteriors of Mersey Ironworks, Liverpool; Millwall Company's Works, Millwall; Messers Maudsley, Son, and Field's Works, Lambeth; Messers Penn and Son's Works, Greenwich and Deptford; Messers Rennie’s Works Deptford and Blackfriars; Mr John Stewart's Blackwall Ironworks, Millwall; The National Boat-Building Company, East Greenwich; Mr Charles Lungley's Deptford-Green, Deptford; Messers Samuda's Works, Millwall; and James Ash and Co.'s Yard, Cubitt Town, Millwall.
The identity of the photographer is unknown. There is a ‘photographic preface’ describing the difficulties of taking the photography for the book.
The book was acquired by The English Heritage Archive in 2012.
