Description

The technician responsible for controlling the stage lighting was known during this era - and for some time afterwards - as the 'gas man', so named because the lighting in Victorian period theatres relied largely on gas, only later switching to electricity.

The image was reproduced on page 65 of Richard Southern's 1970 book, 'The Victorian Theatre - a Pictorial Survey', although he is likely to have sourced the image from the archives of the Drama Department at the University of Bristol, as credited in the acknowledgements of the book.
