2/15 Old School Cottage

18.4.66

- II

House. c1500, altered mid-C19, restored late C20. Timber-framed, rendered infill, sandstone rubble plinth, plain tiled roof. Two framed bays aligned north/south; large rubble chimney at end of south bay with two diagonal brick ridge stacks (which include some C16 bricks). Single storey and attic. Framing: part cruck-framed, two and three panels from sill to wall-plate. Some large swept braces in lower corners, full cruck truss at north gable end, collar and tie-beam truss with struts at south gable end. Diamond wood-mullioned windows were being inserted at time of survey (March 1985) mainly in probable original window positions. Main entrance at south gable end. Attic lights in gable ends. Interior: inter- mediate full cruck truss intact; main beams stop-chamfered; doors between bays have chamfered jambs and floor joists of south bay are also chamfered.

Former partition in ground floor of north bay evident. Large fireplace at south gable end, originally with bread oven. Winder staircase partly survives in north bay. A former medieval open hall house; it probably had a smoke hood which was replaced by the rubble chimney when it was floored; the doorway of the former cross-passage is evident in the east wall-frame; the north bay appears to have been divided into buttery and pantry and the size and detail of the floor joists suggest it was floored originally.
