5409 WEST STREET (North-East Side) Nos 40 to 44 (even) SU 0931 5/54

II GV 2.

Circa 1830s. Former coach-house. 2 storeys. Ivy-clad red brick on stone plinth. "U" plan with hipped slate roofs and flat eaves. Side blocks have 1 window to courtyard and 1 window to front. 3 windows to main block; No 40 all cross glazed sashes, rest 2-light glazing bar casements with segmental heads on 1st floor, glazing bar sashes, also with segmental heads, on ground floor. Doorways in inner corners, No 40 with fluted column to flat roof porch, No 44 with original panelled scroll bracket to flat hood. 6-panel doors, upper panels glazed. Centre of ground floor taken up by large segmental headed coach doors with beaded planks, right hand door narrower. 3 window return to north-west, flint and brick lacing bands. 4 tall banded brick piers to pavement on gault brick bases, plain moulded caps bearing clinker ornament, centre 2 linked by iron lamp overthrow. No 42 is reached through coach arch and is at rear of No 40.
