SZ09SE WESTERN ROAD, Branksome Park 958-1/6/210 (East side) Memorial cross approximately 12 metres north of Church of All Saints

GV II

Memorial cross. Dated 1909. Polished grey granite. Monument has square stepped base with shallow slopes to top surfaces. Square, stop-chamfered cross shaft. Elaborate cross head with carved shields of arms to lower section, then Chinese characters to front and back, carved in relief, framed by tabernacle which has trefoiled ogee-arched head within crocketed gablet. Across head of gablet a keel shape with carved shields of arms either end. Commemorative inscription to base to ANNE LOOMIS WIFE OF/ JH HUNT EX-COMMISSIONER OF CHINESE IMPERIAL CUSTOMS HANITOW/ DIED AT "TRINFIELD" BRANKSOME PARK/ 14 JUNE 1909 AGED 53 YEARS" and another to bottom step to her husband John Henry Hunt, who died at Trinfield March 1949 aged 100. The monument is a remarkable synthesis of Chinese and Gothic elements.
