Description

This information is taken from the statutory List as it was in 2001 and may not be up to date.

GOUDHURST BEDGEBURY ROAD TQ 73 NW (east side) 5/88 Beresford Lodge 20.6.67 GV II Gatelodge. Circa 1840. Sandstone ashlar with plain tiled roof. In style an Italianate tower with recessed low side wings. Two storey and attic tower with plinth and 2 string courses, carried across side wings to form parapet cornices with third string to compressed attic storey, with hipped roof and ornate weather vane, and with 3 round moulded flues to left (ie north). Attic storey lit by small roundels (some blank) and inserted wooden casement to right return, with paired semi-circular headed casements on each elevation of first floor, with imposts and raised keys. Ground floor with glazing bar sash in moulded surround to tower, with recessed round headed casements in keyed surrounds to wings, 2 to left, 1 to right, with 3 arched openings on right return, the centre with glazed door (fronting on to the original driveway). This wing with iron balcony with stone piers, the other with stone parapet. Entry by arched door in single storey extension to left and rear left, of same stone, with flat, low parapeted roof, and glazing bar sashes in simple raised surrounds. The lodge, with the adjacent gates and quadrant walls have been attributed to Decimus Burton because of the simil- arity with his nearly contemporary work in Tunbridge Wells. However, the main house (Bedgebury Park) was at this time (1838-41) being given an Italianate shell by Alexander Roos (architect), who was probably also responsible for this building (see BOE Kent I, 1980, 354).
