Seamen's Orphanage, now hospital. 1871-4.A. Waterhouse.

Common brick with red stone dressings, slate roof. A symmetrical front of 19 bays. 1st to 3rd bays project, of 3 storeys with attics; 2-bay and 1-bay gables. 4th to 8th bays of 2 storeys with attics. 9th bay projects, of 3 storeys with attic and gable. 10th to 14th bays of 2 storeys with attic. 15th to 18th bays recessed, of 3 storeys with attic. 18th bay slightly higher. 19th bay has projecting 5-storey tower with pavilion roof. 1st floor sill course and flush lintel band; 2nd floor will course to 1st 3 bays. Top bracketed cornice. Windows have mullions and transoms, of 2 and 3 lights and flush relieving arches.

Canted 1st floor oriels with pierced parapets to 3rd, 9th and 17th bays. 10th to 14th bays have tall 1st floor windows of 3 cusped lights with 2 transoms between weathered buttresses. 4th to 8th bays have half dormers and alternating raking dormers. 10th to 14th bays have dormers.

Top louvred fleche and end stacks with projecting gables.

Tower has octagonal corner turret and top balustrade; canted bay to ground floor. 5th floor pointed cusped windows with checker work above. 3-bay-lean to porch to left return adjoins 18th bay pointed entrance of 2 orders with ship relief above, Relief of City arms on tower.
