The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.
The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Watford’s care of its mothers. Picture shows Miss D. Brown, S.R.N., S.C.M. Senior Health Visitor at Watford, interviewing an expectant mother on her first visit to the Watford Ante-natal Clinic.”
It was reported in December 1940 that, after 1,024 babies were born in the county in the past year, no maternal mortality had been recorded. This was attributed to ante- and post-natal care provision: pregnant women were encouraged to regularly attend one of four antenatal clinics, midwives were trained in a special training home, and after birth mothers and babies were visited by midwives for a fortnight before a health visitor took over care. The exact location of the clinic shown in this photograph is not known. See also MED01/01/1306-1312 and MED01/01/1314-1315.
