The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “From East London to a Herts manor. Picture shows a mid-day meal scene, with healthy appetites being provided with plenty of good food. A second helping is often wanted and willingly given.”

During the Second World War, patients of the Queen's Hospital for Children and the Princess Elizabeth of York Hospital for Children were moved to improvised hospitals at Ashendene and Bayford Manor in Hertfordshire.
