Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Nurses demonstrate at Red Cross Rally. Picture shows Ward Sister D.Copas, assisted by Nurse K.Clarke, both from King’s College Hospital, demonstrating the Bunyan-Stannard envelope treatment to interested spectators at a Red Cross rally held at Woolworth Old Buildings, Brixton.”

The outbreak of the Second World War prompted research into the treatment of burns and wounds: in 1940 Bunyan and Stannard reported the successful treatment of a large infected burn by using a coated silk ‘envelope’, with the burn being immersed and irrigated with electrolytic sodium hypochlorite three times a day. This treatment, Bunyan claimed, enabled burns to heal “rapidly and painlessly, with the maximum preservation of function”. Its simple method meant the treatment could be used in field ambulances and equipment was issued as part of first aid equipment by the RAF for use by aircrews. See also MED01/01/2192-2193.
